Alex Hobern, a 24-year-old comedian and influencer, is scheduled to travel around the world with a Bitcoin Wallet. He competes against three competitors – these represent the payment methods cash, card payment and smartphone payments.
A competition of payment methods
Their task: to create a world trip with their respective payment method, without resorting to other means of payment. Sponsored by the companies Wirex, SmartStream and Token, he is supposed to travel from London to Amsterdam, but to the west. For this he may only use cryptocurrencies.
Ultimately, he will depend mainly on two things: the worldwide spread or acceptance on the one hand and the courses of the cryptocurrencies on the other. Pavel Matveev, CEO of Wirex, hopes the action will increase the distribution of cryptocurrencies, among other things. Thus, ultimately, it should be shown that Bitcoin & Co. actually work, even if there are still obstacles in their application:
The use of crypto for daily payments can still be very complicated. Our mission at Wirex is to make cryptocurrencies more accessible to all, so we’re excited to support Team Crypto and Alex Hobern in the Payments Race. Alex is relatively new to the world of cryptocurrencies, so the race is an opportunity to find out how far we have come as a practical solution to issuing cryptocurrencies.
Ultimately, Alex Hobern is only allowed to use Bitcoin & Co. to make it to the Money 20/20 Expo in Amsterdam by 3 June.
Team Crypto Racer Alex Hobern may only pay with cryptocurrency for transport, accommodation, food and drinks during the race. The three competitors are limited to bank cards, mobile payments and cash.
On Instagram, Alex Hobern is currently calling on the crypto community to give him some pointers to Bitcoin & Co.’s acceptance points:
